A vulnerability was found in gnu gnutls (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gnutls_x509_crt_get_serial. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The gnutls_x509_crt_get_serial function in the GnuTLS library before 1.2.1, when running on big-endian, 64-bit platforms, calls the asn1_read_value with a pointer to the wrong data type and the wrong length value, which allows remote attackers to bypass the certificate revocation list (CRL) check and cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a crafted X.509 certificate, related to extraction of a serial number.
The weakness was shared 03/26/2010 with Red Hat (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0731. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45366 (CentOS 4 : gnutls (CESA-2010:0167)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.1.22 eliminates this vulnerability.
