A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function CGImageReadGetBytesAtOffset. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in ImageIO in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted JP2 (JPEG2000) image, related to incorrect calculation and the CGImageReadGetBytesAtOffset function.
The weakness was released 03/30/2010 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as HT4077 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0505 since 02/03/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45372 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117331 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2010-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-03-29-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9599.
