Summary
A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Sun JRE 1.5.0/1.6.0. This affects the function readMabCurveData. Executing a manipulation can lead to stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2010-0838. Moreover, an exploit is present.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE 1.5.0/1.6.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function readMabCurveData. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Java 2D component in Oracle Java SE and Java for Business 6 Update 18, 5.0, Update, and 23 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the March 2010 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a reliable researcher that this is a stack-based buffer overflow using an untrusted size value in the readMabCurveData function in the CMM module in the JVM.
The weakness was disclosed 04/01/2010 by Stephen Fewer with Harmony Security (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0838. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 7 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46873 (CentOS 5 : java-1.6.0-openjdk (CESA-2010:0339)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165594 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update IBM Java 6 (SUSE-SA:2010:026)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10868.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57346), Exploit-DB (15056), Tenable (46873), SecurityFocus (BID 39069†) and Secunia (SA39659†). The entries VDB-52532, VDB-52531, VDB-52529 and VDB-52528 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
