Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 9.1.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the custom heap management system in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.3.2, and 8.x before 8.2.2 on Windows and Mac OS X, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted PDF document, aka FG-VD-10-005.

The weakness was published 04/05/2010 by Billy Rios (TippingPoint) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1241 since 04/05/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45504 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.3.2 / 8.2.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB10-09)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165590 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update acroread (SUSE-SA:2010:022)).

Upgrading to version 9.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9708.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57589), Zero-Day.cz (93), Tenable (45504), SecurityFocus (BID 39329†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25471†).
