Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in VMware Server 2.0.0/2.0.1/2.0.2 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality in the library vmnc.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
vmnc.dll in the VMnc media codec in VMware Movie Decoder before 6.5.4 Build 246459 on Windows, and the movie decoder in VMware Workstation 6.5.x before 6.5.4 build 246459, VMware Player 2.5.x before 2.5.4 build 246459, and VMware Server 2.x on Windows, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an AVI file with crafted HexTile-encoded video chunks that trigger heap-based buffer overflows, related to "integer truncation errors."
The weakness was published 04/09/2010 by Alin Rad Pop (iDefense) with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1565. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/31/2025).
