Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.6.x (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component NDR PULL DFS EnumArray1. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The RPC code generator in Samba 3.x before 3.4.16, 3.5.x before 3.5.14, and 3.6.x before 3.6.4 does not implement validation of an array length in a manner consistent with validation of array memory allocation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPC call.
The weakness was published 04/10/2012 by Brian Gorenc as ZDI-12-064 (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1182 since 02/14/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/05/2024).
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 173 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
