Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.7 Filesystem denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.7 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The hfs implementation in Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 10.6.x before 10.6.5 supports hard links to directories and does not prevent certain deeply nested directory structures, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (filesystem corruption) via a crafted application that calls the mkdir and link functions, related to the fsck_hfs program in the diskdev_cmds component.

The weakness was presented 04/27/2010 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0105 since 12/30/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Maksymilian Arciemowicz in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50548 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118728 (Apple Mac OS X 10.6.5 and Security Update 2010-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-11-10-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.5.8 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (12375), Tenable (50548), SecurityFocus (BID 39658†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024723†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27901†). See VDB-4215, VDB-53890, VDB-53765 and VDB-53380 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
