Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9. This vulnerability affects the function sctp_process_unk_param. The manipulation results in input validation.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1173. Furthermore, an exploit is available.
It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected is the function sctp_process_unk_param. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The sctp_process_unk_param function in net/sctp/sm_make_chunk.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.33.3 and earlier, when SCTP is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) via an SCTPChunkInit packet containing multiple invalid parameters that require a large amount of error data.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 05/07/2010 by Jon Oberheide with Nokia as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1173. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Jon Oberheide in Python and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1509 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52971 (SuSE 10 Security Update : Linux kernel (ZYPP Patch Number 7381)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166481 (OpenSuSE Security Update for update kernel to 3.0 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0927-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11571.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (14594), Tenable (52971), SecurityFocus (BID 39794†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25574†). Similar entries are available at VDB-51866, VDB-51857 and VDB-51856. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
