Details
A vulnerability was found in Transmissionbt transmission 1.91 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function tr_magnetParse of the file libtransmission/magnet.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the tr_magnetParse function in libtransmission/magnet.c in Transmission 1.91 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted magnet URL with a large number of (1) tr or (2) ws links.
The weakness was published 03/14/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1853 since 05/07/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46773 (GLSA-201006-06 : Transmission: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117085 (Transmission "tr_magnetParse()" Magnet Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57010), Tenable (46773), SecurityFocus (BID 38814†), OSVDB (63066†) and Secunia (SA39031†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
