Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 11.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 11.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.9 do not properly construct the Origin and Sec-WebSocket-Origin HTTP headers, which might allow remote attackers to bypass an IPv6 literal ACL via a cross-site (1) XMLHttpRequest or (2) WebSocket operation involving a nonstandard port number and an IPv6 address that contains certain zero fields.
The weakness was released 04/24/2012 by Simone Fabiano as MFSA 2012-28 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0475 since 01/09/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A private exploit has been developed by Simone Fabiano. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802842 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165473 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2012:0688-1)).
Upgrading to version 12.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
