A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 11.0 (Web Browser). This affects the function texImage2D of the component WebGL. The texImage2D implementation in the WebGL subsystem in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 11.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.4, Thunderbird 5.0 through 11.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.9 does not properly restrict JSVAL_TO_OBJECT casts, which might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page.

The weakness was presented 04/24/2012 by Jeroen van der Gun (Ms2ger) as MFSA 2012-30 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0478 since 01/09/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A private exploit has been developed by Ms2ger. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58850 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:0515)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120189 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0515)).

Upgrading to version 12.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
