Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in IrfanView up to 3.74 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument integer with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
IrfanView before 4.27 does not properly handle an unspecified integer variable during processing of PSD images, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted image file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, related to a "sign-extension error."
The weakness was shared 05/12/2010 by Stefan Cornelius with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1509. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118032 (IrfanView PSD Image Parsing Two Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.75 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58548), SecurityFocus (BID 40104†), OSVDB (64627†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25748†). The entry VDB-53210 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
