Format string vulnerability in the _msgout function in rpc.pcnfsd in IBM AIX 6.1, 5.3, and earlier; IBM VIOS 2.1, 1.5, and earlier; NFS/ONCplus B.11.31_09 and earlier on HP HP-UX B.11.11, B.11.23, and B.11.31; and SGI IRIX 6.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an RPC request containing format string specifiers in an invalid directory name.

The weakness was presented 05/19/2010 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco with Check Point (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1039. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/27/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
