Details
A vulnerability was found in gnu gnutls up to 1.2.7 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function _gnutls_x509_oid2mac_algorithm in the library lib/gnutls_algorithms.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The _gnutls_x509_oid2mac_algorithm function in lib/gnutls_algorithms.c in GnuTLS before 1.4.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted X.509 certificate that uses a hash algorithm that is not supported by GnuTLS, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.
The weakness was released 05/24/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.gnupg.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-7239. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46812 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS : gnutls12 vulnerability (USN-948-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195104 (Ubuntu Security Notification for GnuTLS12 Vulnerability (USN-948-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.2.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (46812), SecurityFocus (BID 40568†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26015†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
