The default configuration of ASP.NET in Mono before 2.6.4 has a value of FALSE for the EnableViewStateMac property, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, as demonstrated by the __VIEWSTATE parameter to 2.0/menu/menu1.aspx in the XSP sample project.
The weakness was published 05/27/2010 by Hewlett Packard with Hewlett Packard (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-1459. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
