Details
A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 7.2/8.0/8.1-prerelease (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument fhsize with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
sys/nfsclient/nfs_vfsops.c in the NFS client in the kernel in FreeBSD 7.2 through 8.1-PRERELEASE, when vfs.usermount is enabled, does not validate the length of a certain fhsize parameter, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted mount request.
The weakness was released 05/28/2010 by Patroklos Argyroudis (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2020. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Patroklos Argyroudis and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118076 (FreeBSD Kernel NFS Client Local Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
