Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS) implementation in crypto/cms/cms_asn1.c in OpenSSL before 0.9.8o and 1.x before 1.0.0a does not properly handle structures that contain OriginatorInfo, which allows context-dependent attackers to modify invalid memory locations or conduct double-free attacks, and possibly execute arbitrary code, via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 06/03/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0742. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47534 (Fedora 11 : openssl-0.9.8n-2.fc11 (2010-9421)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118357 (Fedora Update for OpenSSL (FEDORA-2010-9574)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10149.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (59039), Tenable (47534), SecurityFocus (BID 40502†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25953†). See VDB-53449 for similar entry. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
