Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. Such manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2010-1643. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
mm/shmem.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.28-rc3, when strict overcommit is enabled, does not properly handle the export of shmemfs objects by knfsd, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and knfsd crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 06/03/2010 by Alan Cox as Bug 595970 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1643. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1536 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49666 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2010:188)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165599 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:031)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58957), Tenable (49666), SecurityFocus (BID 40377†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26540†).
