Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in MediaWiki 1.15 before 1.15.4 and 1.16 before 1.16 beta 3 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via crafted Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) strings that are processed as script by Internet Explorer.
The weakness was presented 06/07/2010 as Bug 23687 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1647. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47613 (Fedora 13 : mediawiki-1.15.4-54.fc13 (2010-10779)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118686 (Fedora Update for MediaWiki (FEDORA-2010-10779)).
Upgrading to version 1.16.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
