A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in RPM up to 2.0.9. This issue affects some unknown functionality in the library lib/fsm.c. lib/fsm.c in RPM before 4.4.3 does not properly reset the metadata of an executable file during deletion of the file in an RPM package removal, which might allow local users to gain privileges by creating a hard link to a vulnerable (1) setuid or (2) setgid file, a related issue to CVE-2010-2059.
The weakness was shared 06/08/2010 by Matt McCutchen (Website). The advisory is shared at distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-4889 since 06/08/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68096 (Oracle Linux 5 : rpm (ELSA-2010-0679)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 2.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
