The IE8 Developer Toolbar in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 SP1, SP2, and SP3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "HTML Element Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was presented 06/08/2010 as MS10-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1260. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 825 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46842 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100082 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS10-035 and KB980088)).
Applying the patch MS10-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
