Unspecified vulnerability in Quartz.dll for DirectShow on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista SP1, and Server 2008 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a media file with crafted compression data, aka "MJPEG Media Decompression Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 06/08/2010 by Yamata Li with Palo Alto Networks (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1880. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/15/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46840 (MS10-033: Vulnerabilities in Media Decompression Could Allow Remote Code Execution (979902)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90606 (Microsoft Media Decompression Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-033)).
A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9845.
