Windows Firewall in tcpip.sys in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly enforce firewall rules for outbound broadcast packets, which allows remote attackers to obtain potentially sensitive information by observing broadcast traffic on a local network, aka "Windows Firewall Bypass Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 05/08/2012 by Bojan Zdrnja with Infigo IS as MS12-032 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0174 since 12/13/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59040 (MS12-032: Vulnerability in TCP/IP Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2688338)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90802 (Microsoft Windows TCP/IP Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS12-032)).
Applying the patch MS12-032 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
