A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple Mac OS X (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in iChat in Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8, and 10.6 before 10.6.4, when AIM is used, allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files via directory traversal sequences in an inline image-transfer operation.

The weakness was presented 06/17/2010 by Kevin Finisterre (pagvac) with MIT Kerberos Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1374 since 04/15/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47023 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118106 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2010-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-06-15-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
