CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Samba up to 3.2.12 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function reply_sesssetup_and_X_spnego of the file sesssetup.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The reply_sesssetup_and_X_spnego function in sesssetup.c in smbd in Samba before 3.4.8 and 3.5.x before 3.5.2 allows remote attackers to trigger an out-of-bounds read, and cause a denial of service (process crash), via a \xff\xff security blob length in a Session Setup AndX request.

The weakness was presented 06/17/2010 by Laurent Gaffie as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.samba.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1642. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59675 (GLSA-201206-22 : Samba: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165462 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Samba (SUSE-SU-2012:0348-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9979.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (59675), SecurityFocus (BID 40097†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26666†). See VDB-53697 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
