A vulnerability was found in Apple cups up to 1.1.3 (Printing Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function cupsFileOpen of the component Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. The cupsFileOpen function in CUPS before 1.4.4 allows local users, with lp group membership, to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the (1) /var/cache/cups/remote.cache or (2) /var/cache/cups/job.cache file.

The weakness was disclosed 06/22/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cups.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2431. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68130 (Oracle Linux 5 : cups (ELSA-2010-0811)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155599 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for CUPS (ELSA-2010-0811)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
