Linux Kernel 3.3.1 fcaps suid access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 3.3.1 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function fcaps suid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The cap_bprm_set_creds function in security/commoncap.c in the Linux kernel before 3.3.3 does not properly handle the use of file system capabilities (aka fcaps) for implementing a privileged executable file, which allows local users to bypass intended personality restrictions via a crafted application, as demonstrated by an attack that uses a parent process to disable ASLR.

The weakness was presented 05/10/2012 by Steve Grubb as DSA-2469-1 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2123 since 04/04/2012. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64177 (SuSE 11.1 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 6547 / 6548 / 6550)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165525 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2012:0904-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.32-45 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75043), Tenable (64177), SecurityFocus (BID 53166†), OSVDB (81812†) and Secunia (SA49098†). See VDB-5384, VDB-5386, VDB-5478 and VDB-60962 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
