Details
A vulnerability was found in KVIrc 3.4.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the DCC functionality in KVIrc 3.4 and 4.0 allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via unknown vectors.
The weakness was released 06/29/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2452. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47154 (Debian DSA-2065-1 : kvirc - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118514 (Fedora Update for KVIrc (FEDORA-2010-10522)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
