A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Avahi 0.6.16/0.6.25. Affected by this issue is the function AvahiDnsPacket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The AvahiDnsPacket function in avahi-core/socket.c in avahi-daemon in Avahi 0.6.16 and 0.6.25 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via a DNS packet with an invalid checksum followed by a DNS packet with a valid checksum, a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-5081.
The weakness was presented 07/08/2010 as Bug 607293 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2244. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52664 (Fedora 15 : avahi-0.6.29-1.fc15 (2011-3033)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155640 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Avahi (ELSA-2010-0528)).
