Google Chrome before 19.0.1084.46 does not properly handle glyphs, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 05/15/2012 by Brett Wilson (miaubiz) with Chromium Development Community as 122585 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release was coordinated with Google. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3093 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59103 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (1449af37-9eba-11e1-b9c1-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165306 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Chromium, v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0656-1)).
Upgrading to version 19.0.1084.46 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
