A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.53 (Network Management Software). This affects the function execvp_nc in the library ov.dll of the file webappmon.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the execvp_nc function in the ov.dll module in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.51 and 7.53, when running on Windows, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long HTTP request to webappmon.exe.
The weakness was disclosed 07/22/2010 with TippingPoint as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2703. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51645 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code (HPSBMA02621 SSRT100352)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42347 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBMA02557)).
A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9271.
