Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Microsoft Windows. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1897. Local access is required to approach this attack. Moreover, an exploit is present.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Windows kernel-mode drivers in win32k.sys in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 do not properly validate pseudo-handle values in callback parameters during window creation, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Window Creation Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2010 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1897. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48285 (MS10-048: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2160329)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90627 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Privilege Elevation Vulnerability (MS10-048)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (60698), Exploit-DB (14608), Tenable (48285), SecurityFocus (BID 42206†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26770†). The entries VDB-53510, VDB-54342, VDB-54341 and VDB-54335 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
