The Cinepak codec in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, and Windows 7 does not properly decompress media files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file, aka "Cinepak Codec Decompression Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 08/11/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2553. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/23/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48292 (MS10-055: Vulnerability in Cinepak Codec Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982665)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
