Autonomy Keyview Filter Sdk 10.9 Spreadsheet wkssr.dll memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Autonomy Keyview Filter Sdk 10.9 and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown function in the library wkssr.dll of the component Spreadsheet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SpreadSheet Lotus 123 reader (wkssr.dll) in Autonomy KeyView 10.4 and 10.9, as used in multiple IBM, Symantec, and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors related to allocation of an array of pointers and "string indexing," which triggers memory corruption.

The weakness was presented 08/17/2010 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1524. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/23/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47899 (Autonomy KeyView Filter Module Multiple Memory Corruption Vulnerabilities (Lotus Notes)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118572 (Symantec Products Autonomy KeyView Filter Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (47899), SecurityFocus (BID 41928†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26653†). See VDB-54384, VDB-54382, VDB-54381 and VDB-54380 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
