A vulnerability was found in FreeType (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Mac_Read_POST_Resource. Heap-based buffer overflow in the Mac_Read_POST_Resource function in base/ftobjs.c in FreeType before 2.4.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted length value in a POST fragment header in a font file.
The weakness was presented 08/19/2010 by Robert Swiecki (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.nongnu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2519. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48217 (CentOS 4 / 5 : freetype (CESA-2010:0578)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118238 (FreeType Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
