Details
A vulnerability was found in strongSwan up to 4.4.0 (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component IKE Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The IKE daemon in strongSwan 4.3.x before 4.3.7 and 4.4.x before 4.4.1 does not properly check the return values of snprintf calls, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted (1) certificate or (2) identity data that triggers buffer overflows.
The weakness was published 08/20/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.strongswan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2628 since 07/06/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75749 (openSUSE Security Update : strongswan (openSUSE-SU-2010:0496-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165213 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:015)).
Upgrading to version 4.3.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75749), SecurityFocus (BID 42444†), Secunia (SA40956†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024338†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26826†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
