Wireshark up to 1.6.7 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Wireshark. This impacts an unknown function. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2012-2393. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

epan/dissectors/packet-diameter.c in the DIAMETER dissector in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.13 and 1.6.x before 1.6.8 does not properly construct certain array data structures, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet that triggers incorrect memory allocation.

The weakness was presented 05/22/2012 by Klaus Heckelmann with Wireshark as wnpa-sec-2012-09 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2393 since 04/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Wireshark and been published 2 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59940 (Fedora 16 : wireshark-1.6.8-1.fc16 (2012-10175)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120907 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4/11.4b Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (18918), Tenable (59940), SecurityFocus (BID 53652†), OSVDB (82099†) and Secunia (SA49226†). See VDB-5442, VDB-5444, VDB-6344 and VDB-6763 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
