Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 2.2 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 2.2 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Hypervisor (aka rhev-hypervisor) in Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 2.2, and KVM 83, when the Intel VT-x extension is enabled, allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and host OS crash) via vectors related to instruction emulation.

The weakness was presented 08/24/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0435. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75553 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2011:0004-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155627 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for KVM (ELSA-2010-0627)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75553), SecurityFocus (BID 42582†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27004†). See VDB-54464, VDB-54462 and VDB-55840 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
