A vulnerability has been found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 1.1.3 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing in the library wintab32.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Untrusted search path vulnerability in bin/winvlc.c in VLC Media Player 1.1.3 and earlier allows local users, and possibly remote attackers, to execute arbitrary code and conduct DLL hijacking attacks via a Trojan horse wintab32.dll that is located in the same folder as a .mp3 file.
The weakness was presented 08/25/2010 by Secfence (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3124. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/21/2025).
A public exploit has been developed by Secfence in C++ and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
