A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla SeaMonkey up to 1.0.8 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing in the library dwmapi.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Untrusted search path vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.12 and 3.6.x before 3.6.9, Thunderbird before 3.0.7 and 3.1.x before 3.1.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.7 on Windows XP allows local users, and possibly remote attackers, to execute arbitrary code and conduct DLL hijacking attacks via a Trojan horse dwmapi.dll that is located in the same folder as a .htm, .html, .jtx, .mfp, or .eml file.
The weakness was published 02/01/2010 by h4ck3r#47 as Bug 579593 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3131 since 08/26/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by h4ck3r#47 and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49166 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (4a21ce2c-bb13-11df-8e32-000f20797ede)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165613 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2010:049)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11248.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (14783), Tenable (49166), OSVDB (67502†), Secunia (SA41095†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27109†).
