A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Adobe Shockwave Player up to 8.0.195 (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality in the library IML32.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. IML32.dll in Adobe Shockwave Player before 11.5.8.612 does not properly parse .dir files, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a malformed file containing an invalid value, as demonstrated by a value at position 0x320D of a certain file.
The weakness was disclosed 08/26/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2868 since 07/27/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48436 (Shockwave Player < 11.5.8.612), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118432 (Adobe Shockwave Player Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (APSB10-20)).
Upgrading to version 8.0.196 eliminates this vulnerability.
