Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in KDE sc up to 4.5.0. Affected by this issue is the function TranscribePalmImageToJPEG of the file generators/plucker/unpluck/image.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the RLE decompression functionality in the TranscribePalmImageToJPEG function in generators/plucker/inplug/image.cpp in Okular in KDE SC 4.3.0 through 4.5.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted image in a PDB file.
The weakness was presented 08/25/2010 by Stefan Cornelius with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at kde.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-2575 since 07/01/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75524 (openSUSE Security Update : gwenview (openSUSE-SU-2010:0691-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165197 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:018)).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61371), Tenable (75524), SecurityFocus (BID 42702†), OSVDB (67454†) and Secunia (SA40952†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
