A vulnerability classified as critical was found in EGroupware up to 9.1 (Groupware Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file spellchecker.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
phpgwapi/js/fckeditor/editor/dialog/fck_spellerpages/spellerpages/serverscripts/spellchecker.php in EGroupware 1.4.001+.002; 1.6.001+.002 and possibly other versions before 1.6.003; and EPL 9.1 before 9.1.20100309 and 9.2 before 9.2.20100309; allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the (1) aspell_path or (2) spellchecker_lang parameters.
The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2010 by Nahuel Grisolia (Website). The advisory is available at egroupware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3313 since 09/13/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Nahuel Grisolia and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:spellchecker.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45055 (Debian DSA-2013-1 : egroupware - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175091 (Debian Security Update for Egroupware (DSA-2013)).
Upgrading to version 9.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
