Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function snd_ctl_new. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in the snd_ctl_new function in sound/core/control.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc5-next-20100929 allow local users to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted (1) SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_ADD or (2) SNDRV_CTL_IOCTL_ELEM_REPLACE ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 10/04/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 638478 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3442. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1659 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51775 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2010:0936)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155569 (Oracle Linux 5 Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2010-2011)).
Applying the patch 5591bf07225523600450edd9e6ad258bb877b779 is able to eliminate this problem.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51775), SecurityFocus (BID 43787†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27796†). The entries VDB-4176, VDB-55542, VDB-55538 and VDB-55535 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
