A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox ESR up to 10.0.4 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file jsinfer.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. jsinfer.cpp in Mozilla Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.5 and Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.5 does not properly determine data types, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript code.

The weakness was disclosed 06/05/2012 by Christian Holler as 2012-34 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1939 since 03/30/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/21/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802870 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120275 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0710)).

Upgrading to version 10.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
