Heap-based buffer overflow in the utf16_to_isolatin1 function in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 12.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.5, Thunderbird 5.0 through 12.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger a character-set conversion failure.

The weakness was shared 06/05/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as 2012-40 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1947 since 03/30/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
