Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.8/5-1.8.1/5-1.8.2/5-1.8.3 (Network Authentication Software). This vulnerability affects the function merge_authdata of the file kdc_authdata.c of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The merge_authdata function in kdc_authdata.c in the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.8.x before 1.8.4 does not properly manage an index into an authorization-data list, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash), or possibly obtain sensitive information, spoof authorization, or execute arbitrary code, via a TGS request that triggers an uninitialized pointer dereference, as demonstrated by a request from a Windows Active Directory client.
The weakness was released 10/07/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1322. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75558 (openSUSE Security Update : krb5 (openSUSE-SU-2010:0709-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165198 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:019)).
