Linux Kernel 2.6.18 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

arch/x86/hvm/vmx/vmcs.c in the virtual-machine control structure (VMCS) implementation in the Linux kernel 2.6.18 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, when an Intel platform without Extended Page Tables (EPT) functionality is used, accesses VMCS fields without verifying hardware support for these fields, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) by requesting a VMCS dump for a fully virtualized Xen guest.

The issue has been introduced in 09/20/2006. The weakness was shared 10/08/2010 with Red Hat as Bug 620490 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2938. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1479 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67080 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2010:0723)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119701 (VMware ESX Updates to Third Party Libraries and ESX Service Console (VMSA-2011-0012)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67080), SecurityFocus (BID 43578†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27551†).
