Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in F5 FirePass up to 7.0.0. This affects some unknown functionality of the component sshd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-255. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
F5 BIG-IP appliances 9.x before 9.4.8-HF5, 10.x before 10.2.4, 11.0.x before 11.0.0-HF2, and 11.1.x before 11.1.0-HF3, and Enterprise Manager before 2.1.0-HF2, 2.2.x before 2.2.0-HF1, and 2.3.x before 2.3.0-HF3, use a single SSH private key across different customers installations and do not properly restrict access to this key, which makes it easier for remote attackers to perform SSH logins via the PubkeyAuthentication option.
The bug was discovered 02/16/2012. The weakness was released 06/06/2012 by Florent Daigniere with Matta Consulting as SOL13600 as not defined knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.f5.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1493 since 03/01/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/02/2025). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Dave Kennedy (ReL1K) in Python and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at trustmatta.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 97 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73920 (SSH Static Key Accepted), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120271 (F5 Big-IP Remote SSH Vulnerability (SOL13600)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Users who cannot upgrade to a non-vulnerable version are advised to reconfigure SSH access on their systems.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (19064), Tenable (73920), SecurityFocus (BID 53897†), OSVDB (82780†) and Secunia (SA49396†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-5512. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
