G.rodola pyftpdlib up to 0.5.1 getpeername race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in G.rodola pyftpdlib up to 0.5.1. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function getpeername. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the FTPHandler class in ftpserver.py in pyftpdlib before 0.5.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon outage) by establishing and then immediately closing a TCP connection, leading to the getpeername function having an ENOTCONN error, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-3494.

The weakness was presented 10/19/2010 as tp://co (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.google.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-5011 since 10/19/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50482 (Fedora 12 : pyftpdlib-0.5.2-1.fc12 (2010-16731)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 0.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62701), Tenable (50482), SecurityFocus (BID 43233†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28046†).
